What Is Spirituality?

spirituality

Spirituality can help you find meaning in life, cope with pain and distress, build resilience, feel balanced mentally and physically and connect to something bigger than yourself. Spirituality can come from a religion, or from activities like meditation or spending time in nature. What is important is that you find a way to nurture your spiritual side, that feels right for you and that you can stick with over the long term.

When it comes to spirituality, different people have very different definitions and views. Some people associate spirituality with the New Age movement, healing and psychic powers. Others think of it as a combination of yoga, meditation, expansion of consciousness and the higher Self. Yet, for most people, spirituality is simply a part of their daily lives and they don’t think much about it.

Some studies suggest that spirituality may be beneficial to mental health because it increases a sense of hope and optimism, which can be helpful when coping with difficult situations. It also promotes positive emotions such as gratitude and forgiveness, which can be important for maintaining emotional well-being.

However, it is important to distinguish between spirituality and religiosity. The North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA-International) states that spirituality is an aspect of a person’s identity and can exist without religious practice. It is also important to remember that the definition of spirituality is constantly changing and evolving with new life experiences. If something doesn’t resonate with you on a deep level, then that is not spirituality for you.
