Mine Gets a Facelift!

Back in October of 2005, Foundation Board members Bill Durbin and Bill Snyder conducted a survey of the Mine buildings and facilities, noting the areas where painting and repair work was needed. Little did we know that in a few months, some angels in khaki shirts would come our way!

Move ahead in time to the April 2006 Gala. Paul Wilson, Scoutmaster for Henderson Boy Scout Troop 95 introduced himself and asked if there were projects available for two prospective Eagle Scouts in the troop. The answer was an immediate YES!! We gave Paul a tour of the Mine and he eagerly brought the proposal to his two candidates, Matt Wilson (Paul’s son) and Jason Anichowski. They agreed to take on the “facelift” project and set out to develop a plan. They divided the various tasks between them and went to work. Between the two, they were able to obtain donations of materials (paint and various supplies) totaling over $1,800 from local area merchants. After some revisions to the project plans, the Eagle Board of Review signed off and approved the project.

Putting together a top-notch crew of Scouts and parents, the work was accomplished in two very long and busy weekends, November 4-5 and November 10-12 (Columbus Day 3-day holiday) of 2006.

Their work included complete exterior painting of the Visitor’s Center, painting of the NTS train exhibit, coating the wood framework on the stamp mill and Mine building head frames with linseed oil, cosmetic repairs and a complete new paint job on the Caterpillar truck on the side of the Mine, installation of a protective cover on the water faucet used by the gold-panning crew and gathering up and removal of two pickup loads of trash.

A big “Two Thumbs Up” to Matt and Jason and crew for a beautiful job done VERY WELL!! Your planning and hard work resulted has made the McCaw School of Mines look good as new.

The McCaw Foundation Board, staff, and the McCaw Might Miners salute you and thank you very much.
